9 January 2008

To celebrate the centenary of George Rodger's birth in Hale, Cheshire, Imperial War Museum North presents a major photographic exhibition of the life and wartime work of this extraordinary photographer between 9 February - 27 April.

George Rodger was mostly self taught, a pioneer of photojournalism and a co-founder of the Magnum cooperative photo agency. In many ways, he was ahead of his time. Rodger documented the Second World War for an American audience - his output therefore differs subtly from photojournalism created for a British audience.

Imperial War Museum North reveals how war has shaped and continues to shape people's lives and admission to the Museum and to the exhibition is free.

The exhibition features 100 powerful photographs by George Rodger (displayed as prints, lightboxes, projections and banners) supplemented by documentary film, interviews, wartime publications and personal objects lent by George Rodger's family.

The Imperial War Museum North is open 7 days a week from 10am - 6pm (Nov to Feb 10am - 5pm) with free
admission at The Quays, Trafford Wharf Road, Trafford Park, Manchester M17 1TZ.
